Shes been sat here since November now, with me doing the odd bit to her, but mainly trying to keep her tidy(not with a lot of success!!), she's only moved once - when the grass really did get too long! From the road she doesnt look all that bad... but from the front and the house you can see i did get to work on her!! Shes got a 2.25 3Brg D in her now, but she would have had a 6 cylinder 2.6lt petrol when built... ...as evidenced by the strange shaped bulkhead and the dead straight gear lever, but thats long gone, and a nice 200TDI Disco engine will be going in instead, as per Kettle. The bulkhead and footwell's are knackered, so thats a major place to start. A 2005 TD5 defender unit will be going in, modified for the Series III windscreen hinges - The SIIa would probably be easier...but I perfer the III. First up will be the chassis repairs though..and i dont yet know how extensive that will be... so.. how long before this and the pile of bits in the attic becomes one We got the remaining wing off, and the drivers door, and with Kettles help and my rigid bar we got her under cover, and work started in earnest. The back door came off easily, but the roof chose to be a right sod! The windscreen was fun too - i really need to put weight on!! But out it came, out of harms way, and then we removed the remaining bolts in the hardtop. Badgers topless!! Away it went and its back to the front end... We took off the rotten bulkhead so we good get at the engine better...when built she had a 2.6 6cyl Petrol, which meant that the fitting of a 2.25 left the back of the rocker cover under the bulkhead - how anyone ever did the tappets I'll never know!! Away goes the knackered 2.25 3BRG Diesel.. Then it was out with the IIa gearbox..and all that was left was to remove the tub, drop the axles and empty the diesel tank.. come the morning... Finally i could she just how bad the chassis was...and boy was i in for a surprise!!
We knew the rear crossmember was gone..and the patches were awful Someone had had some nice patches folded up to repair the ends..unfortunately..they werent very good welders, and they did fall off!! Its knackered over the springhangers.. And the crossmember under the front of the 5-door tub nothing new about knackered outriggers..but they are an easy repair....watch this space for further reports
